Tarphon

(fl. 1st cent)
   Palestinian tanna. He served with his priestly family in the Temple, and studied with Johanan ben Zakkai and Gamaliel I. He was active in discussions at the academy at Jabneh. The Mishnah refers to differences of opinion between him and Akiva regarding the halakhah.
